📚 Lessons / Ngā Akoranga — Core Arc (6 lessons)

This unit ships as two self-contained teaching arcs. The core arc below is the default: six fully-resourced lessons built around a school-grounds field study, the 1080 debate, restoration planting, and a conservation campaign. A 10-lesson field-journal arc is available as an alternative for classes that want a longer sequence built around an assessed Ecology Field Journal — see Alternative Arc further down this page. Teach one arc or the other, not both: they cover the same ground at different depths.

Reading the references below: this unit carries two arcs that are both numbered from 1 — a six-lesson core arc (What is an Ecosystem? → Guardians of the Future) and a ten-lesson field-journal arc. Every reference below is to the core arc, and names the lesson so it resolves from either.

"Biotic and abiotic factors in ecosystems can affect the distribution and abundance of organisms; changes in one part can affect the balance and wellbeing of the whole system (e.g. new predator or pathogen, amount of rainfall, removal of trees, hunting)."

How the unit teaches this: Core arc Lesson 1 What is an Ecosystem? and Lesson 3 Field Study – Rangahau Taiao — the schoolyard ecosystem audit and the quadrat field study, where ākonga measure abiotic factors and compare biodiversity between microhabitats.

How the unit teaches this: Core arc Lesson 4 Human Impact & Conservation — ākonga graph possum-pressure data from the impact lab and analyse before/after landscape change.

How the unit teaches this: Core arc Lesson 5 Restoration & Kaitiakitanga — the native planting workshop and school restoration proposal.

"Indigenous knowledge systems, such as mātauranga Māori, are often founded on long-term observations of environmental patterns. For example, ngā tohu o te taiao can be used to monitor seasonal changes and ecosystem health."

How the unit teaches this: Core arc Lesson 3 Field Study – Rangahau Taiao and Lesson 5 Restoration & Kaitiakitanga — maramataka, indicator species and rāhui are taught alongside the field methods they parallel. (In the field-journal arc, rāhui is taught in its own Lesson 5, Kaitiakitanga & Traditional Māori Resource Management; maramataka and ngā tohu o te taiao are taught in the core arc only.)

🔗 Alternative Arc — 10-lesson Field-Journal sequence

The alternative arc runs ten lessons around an assessed Ecology Field Journal — each ākonga's own exercise book, set up in the arc's first lesson and built section by section (trophic pyramids, food webs, pest tracking, quadrat sampling, stream MCI audit, restoration design). Choose it over the core arc when you have the timetable room for a full field-data spine. The ten lessons, in teaching order:

Pedagogical Foundations | Ngā Tūāpou Akoranga

Ecology is the science of relationships — between species, between populations, between organisms and their environments. Three researchers explain why genuine ecological understanding requires more than food webs and population curves.

Kaupapa Māori
Graham Smith
Mātauranga Māori ecology — the knowledge of relationships between species, seasons, and wāhi embedded in Māori practice over generations — is not pre-scientific folk knowledge; it is a data-rich empirical tradition. Smith’s insistence that Māori knowledge systems have epistemological validity shapes why this unit treats mātauranga ecological knowledge as data, not decoration.
Place-Based Education
Wally Penetito
Penetito’s framework requires that ecological learning happen in a specific local ecosystem — not the generalised “forest” or “wetland” of the textbook diagram. Students who have collected data in a real ecosystem, noticed its specific species mix, and traced its specific disturbance history understand ecology in a way that textbook students cannot replicate in examinations or in life.
Progressive Education
John Dewey
Dewey’s distinction between education as preparation for life and education as life itself explains why fieldwork is not a supplement to this unit but its core. “We don’t study the river to understand ecology; we go to the river” is a Deweyan principle. Every investigation in this unit is structured around real evidence from real environments, because that is the only kind of ecology that transfers to a student’s own observations after school.
