⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now: Quadrats Don't Swim (10 mins)

Last lesson's quadrats worked because plants stay put. Write down two problems you would hit trying to use a 1 m² quadrat in a moving stream — then one idea for how you might sample stream life instead. Pair-share; keep your idea to compare with the method ecologists actually use, which you meet today.

📖 Activity 1: Stream Health Audit — Macroinvertebrates & MCI (25 mins)

  1. Sort (8 min): in groups at the sampling trays (stream sample, or the kaiako's pre-collected bucket/photo set), sort every organism you find using the MCI identification chart: mayfly, stonefly and caddisfly larvae in one tray; worms, snails and midges in another.
  2. Score (7 min): each taxon carries a sensitivity score — mayflies and stoneflies high (they only survive clean water), worms and snails low (they tolerate almost anything). Record each taxon and its score, then calculate your tray's average: an MCI-style stream score.
  3. Measure (5 min): take the physical readings for the same water: clarity (turbidity tube), temperature, and pH.
  4. Verdict (5 min): healthy, degraded, or poor? Groups must justify their verdict with BOTH lines of evidence — the invertebrate score and the physical measures — and say which they trust more, and why.

📝 Activity 2: Field Journal Section 7 — Stream Health Audit (20 mins)

Write up Section 7 of your Ecology Field Journal: the taxon list with sensitivity scores and your calculated stream score, the physical readings, and your justified health verdict. Use macroinvertebrate, bio-indicator, MCI and turbidity correctly. Finish by answering: why is a mayfly a more honest witness to a stream's health than a single water test taken on one day?

🏫 Kaiako Planning & Pedagogy Notes

Prep and safety: if no stream is walkable from school, collect a sample bucket beforehand or run the sort from the tray photo set — the MCI logic is identical. A real stream visit needs a second adult, clear water-edge boundaries, and every organism returned to its habitat. The stream score lands in Section 7 and becomes evidence in Lessons 8 and 9 for where restoration effort should go.
