Pest control (last lesson) removes the pressure; restoration rebuilds the habitat. From memory, list three native plants met anywhere in this unit and, for each, one reason it would suit a stream-bank planting — think roots, shade, speed of growth, or what feeds on it. Pair-check, then keep the list: it seeds today's design.
📖 Activity 1: Restoration Design for a Real Patch (25 mins)
- Assess the site (8 min): in pairs, walk to (or map from photos) the agreed degraded patch — a gully, stream bank or bare corner of the grounds. Record: what grows there now, which weeds dominate, sun/shade pattern, and soil moisture. Your Lesson 6 sampling data is the baseline if the patch overlaps your zones.
- Choose species (7 min): from the eco-sourced list (e.g. harakeke, mānuka, kānuka, tī kōuka, carex), choose four or five natives matched to your site's conditions — every choice needs a stated reason, starting from your Do Now list.
- Draw the plan (6 min): sketch the planting layout to rough scale: what goes where, spacing, pioneers (mānuka/kānuka) sheltering slower growers, weed-clearing zone marked.
- Monitoring plan (4 min): write the 12-month check schedule: survival counts each term, weed checks, and a fixed photo-point so change is visible.
📝 Activity 2: Field Journal Section 9 — Restoration Project (20 mins)
Write up Section 9 of your Ecology Field Journal: the site assessment, your species table (plant → site condition it matches → reason), the layout sketch, and the 12-month monitoring plan. Use eco-sourcing, riparian, succession and monitoring correctly. Finish with one honest risk — the most likely way this planting fails (drought, mowing, weeds, vandalism) — and the single step in your plan that guards against it.

Prep: an eco-sourced species list from your nearest native nursery or council biodiversity team beats the generic one above — ask for what they actually supply for your soil type. If a real planting session is possible (the kaiako move), design still comes first: plant to the plan, then monitor against it, or the monitoring plan is fiction.
