Kaiako Move: Host an Ecology Science Fair where student pairs display their Field Journals and Restoration Plans to the school community.

Immediate Task: Submit your completed Ecology Field Journal — contents page first, all nine sections in order.

⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now: Two Sticky Notes (10 mins)

Flick back through all nine sections of your Field Journal. Mark two pages with sticky notes: the piece of data you are most confident in (you collected it, you can defend it), and the section that most changed how you see your local environment. Write one sentence for each saying why. You will use both in today's walkthrough.

📖 Activity 1: Assemble & Rehearse the Walkthrough (25 mins)

  1. Assemble (8 min): put the journal in its final order — contents page first, all nine sections, every graph labelled, field pages flattened and taped in if they travelled loose.
  2. Prepare (7 min): using your two sticky-noted pages, plan a 2-minute walkthrough for a visitor who knows no ecology: what you measured, what the numbers say, and what should happen next for that patch of land or stream.
  3. Rehearse (7 min): pairs swap and deliver the walkthrough. Listener gives one star (what convinced you) and one wish (what needs evidence, not opinion).
  4. Adjust (3 min): fix the one thing your listener's wish exposed before the real audience — that is what scientists do with peer review.

📝 Activity 2: Final Submission & Kaitiakitanga Commitment (20 mins)

Complete and submit the journal: a short synthesis paragraph inside the back cover connecting at least three sections (e.g. how the pest tracking data, the MCI score and the restoration design describe the same landscape), then your kaitiakitanga commitment — one specific action, a timeframe, and how you will check you actually did it. This is a role you are choosing, not one being assigned: pick an action you can genuinely keep. The journal is assessed as one piece, as set up in Lesson 1.

🏫 Kaiako Planning & Pedagogy Notes

Assessment and scale: the journal is assessed as ONE piece — nine sections, the synthesis paragraph, and the commitment — as set up in Lesson 1; resist marking it section by section now. The science fair (kaiako move) works fine as a classroom gallery if a school-wide event is too big; the 2-minute walkthrough is the assessable moment either way. Collect commitments and revisit them once next term — that follow-up is what separates a commitment from an exit slip.
