Your brief

Design a clear 6×6 zoo map and a visitor route. Include an entrance, five animal enclosures, one kai/rest space, and a vet point. Your route must visit three enclosures and the rest space.

What to print: one packet per student. All referenced grid and response spaces are provided.

Mātauranga Māori: use the Kirikiriroa place name respectfully and the compass terms raki (north), tonga (south), rāwhiti (east), and hauāuru (west) accurately.

2. Write the route

Start at the entrance. Use north/raki, south/tonga, east/rāwhiti, west/hauāuru and a number of grid squares for every step.

3. Calculate

Total grid squares travelled:

If 1 square = 20 metres, total distance:

Grid mapSome labels or locations need correction.Grid, key, and references are complete and accurate.Layout is especially clear and constraints are justified.
RouteDirections need extra information.A partner can follow the route without guessing. Two routes are compared and the choice is defended.
DistanceGrid count or scale working is incomplete.Grid count and scaled distance are correct.Calculations support a visitor-focused design decision.
TestingFeedback is recorded.Feedback leads to a specific improvement. The improvement is justified with evidence from the test.
