Level 2 Geography: Urban Patterns

Ten lessons that take a class from "cities look messy" to a written, evidenced explanation of why one real city is shaped the way it is. Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is the worked example throughout.

🌟 The Big Idea

A city's shape is a record of decisions. Land values, harbours and volcanic cones, motorway routes, zoning rules, who was allowed to buy where and when — every one of those leaves a mark you can point at on a map. This unit teaches ākonga to read that map: name the pattern, explain what produced it, and back the explanation with evidence from a named place rather than a general claim about cities.

📋 What Ākonga Build

1. A working vocabulary

Concentration, linear, concentric, sectoral, fragmented — used precisely, about a specific place, not recited from a glossary. Plus the three classical land-use models and where each one fits or fails.

2. Evidence habits

Annotated satellite imagery, census and deprivation data by meshblock, bid-rent graphs, isochrone maps. Every claim in the portfolio has to point at something an assessor can check.

3. Causal explanation

Physical factors and human processes, held apart and then put back together: why the isthmus forces growth north and south, why industry sits near ports and flat land, why transport investment moves employment.

4. One assessed portfolio

Each lesson adds a numbered section. By Lesson 10 ākonga are synthesising and self-reviewing a complete piece of work rather than starting an assessment cold.

📖 The Ten Lessons

Lesson 1: Defining Urban Spatial Patterns & Morphology

Names the five pattern types and the idea of urban morphology, then puts them to work: ākonga annotate satellite imagery of Auckland's urban footprint and classify the land-use zones they find — CBD, residential, industrial, transport corridors. The kaiako move overlays LINZ and Auckland Council GeoMaps layers showing growth from 1840 to now. Portfolio Section 1.

Lesson 2: Urban Land Use Models

Burgess concentric zone, Hoyt sector, Harris and Ullman multiple nuclei — compared against Auckland's actual layout. The lesson deliberately goes hunting for the anomalies, such as the suburban employment hubs at Albany and Manukau that a single-CBD model cannot account for. Portfolio Section 2.

Lesson 3: Factors & Processes Shaping Urban Patterns

Separates physical factors (topography, coastlines, the volcanic field) from human processes (land values, transport infrastructure, zoning, settlement history). Ākonga graph the bid-rent curve and trace sprawl along the SH1 and SH16 corridors. The kaiako move links maunga and moana to pā site selection and to the colonial layout that followed. Portfolio Section 3.

Lesson 4: Residential Segregation & Socioeconomic Disparities

Reads housing density, income and ethnicity as spatial data across suburbs, using the NZ Index of Deprivation at meshblock level. The question driving it is positional: where do the highest- and lowest-decile areas sit relative to the centre, the harbours and the transport network, and what decisions put them there. Portfolio Section 4.

Lesson 5: Commercial & Industrial Location Patterns

Retail hierarchy and ribbon development on one side, heavy and light industry on the other — proximity to ports, motorways and cheap flat land. Ākonga map the industrial nodes at Penrose, Mt Wellington, Wiri and Rosedale, then justify site selection against spatial criteria. Portfolio Section 5.

Lesson 6: Transport Networks & Urban Accessibility

Motorways, rail, busway and ferry treated as pattern-makers rather than background. Isochrone mapping of peak travel times, the Northern Busway as transit-oriented development, and the harder question of which neighbourhoods are left with low accessibility. Portfolio Section 6.

Lesson 7: Urban Change: Gentrification & Renewal

Decay, gentrification, medium-density infill and brownfield redevelopment, using Ponsonby and Grey Lynn as early gentrification and Glen Innes as renewal with displacement. The displacement question is put to the class openly rather than resolved for them: is a renewal programme community development or gentrification, and who gets to decide. Portfolio Section 7.

Lesson 8: Mātauranga Māori & Sustainable Urban Futures

Te Aranga urban design principles, papakāinga housing, and climate-resilient urban futures. The analytical hinge is that papakāinga is residential location driven by whakapapa rather than by market forces, which is a direct challenge to what the concentric zone model assumes about how land gets allocated. Lesson 9: Exam Technique & Excellence Answers

What actually separates Achieved, Merit and Excellence in a written geographic response. The teacher models one paragraph live — claim, spatial evidence from a named Auckland location, explanation, link back to the geographic concept — and ākonga draft one of their own against annotated exemplars.

Lesson 10: Capstone Portfolio Synthesis

Pulls the arc together: patterns, models, physical and cultural processes, segregation and sustainable design in one submitted portfolio, plus a spatial analysis presentation and a self-review against the criteria. Closes on a forecasting discussion about which Auckland pattern will intensify and which might reverse.

🔀 Choosing Between the Two Versions

Te Kete Ako carries two versions of this unit. They are not copies of each other and neither replaces the other. Both run the same ten lesson titles, the same learning intentions, and the same numbered portfolio. They differ in two places, and the difference runs in opposite directions, so the choice is a real one.

Media anchors. Lessons 1 to 3 share the same clip and viewing prompts in both versions. From Lesson 4 on, the two versions pick different clips. In two of those lessons this version anchors on Aotearoa-sourced material where the other version reaches for an international explainer series: New Zealand housing-market and wealth-inequality reporting in the segregation lesson, and a papakāinga housing toolkit published by a New Zealand district council in the mātauranga Māori lesson. Elsewhere both versions use international explainers. The kaiako moves follow the same line here: the NZ Index of Deprivation at meshblock level in Lesson 4, and Glen Innes alongside Ponsonby in Lesson 7 with the Kāinga Ora renewal question put directly to the class.

In-class activity blocks. This is where the other version is fuller. In this version the Do Now, the mapping block and the portfolio block run to one steady routine across all ten lessons: a ten-minute recall of spatial terminology, models and Auckland locations; a twenty-five-minute mapping and pattern-analysis block on GIS layers, census maps and model diagrams; then a twenty-minute portfolio writing block. The lesson-specific direction sits in the learning intentions, the media anchor and the kaiako move, and you bring the task detail on the day. The other version writes all three blocks fresh for every lesson, with named tasks and timings.

So: take this one if the Aotearoa case material and NZ data sources matter most to you and you are comfortable shaping the in-class task yourself. Take the other if you want the activity written out lesson by lesson before you walk in.

🏫 Kaiako Notes

Assessment. This unit prepares ākonga for the internally assessed Level 2 Geography standard on urban patterns, worth three credits. The standard asks for geographic understanding of an urban pattern: describe it, explain the factors and processes behind it, and evidence both. Achievement-standard numbers are deliberately kept out of the teaching copy — check the current standard and its assessment specifications on the NZQA site before you plan the submission.

Case study. Auckland runs through all ten lessons because the isthmus makes the physical constraint unusually legible. If your ākonga live somewhere else, the sequence transfers: swap the named places and keep the analytical moves. Lessons 4, 5 and 6 in particular depend on data you can pull for any NZ city from Stats NZ and your regional council's mapping service.

Portfolio. Sections 1 to 8 are drafted in class, Lesson 9 sharpens the writing, Lesson 10 submits. If you are short of time, Lessons 1, 2, 3 and 7 carry the core of the standard; Lessons 5 and 6 can be compressed into one.

Before you teach Lesson 8. Te Aranga design principles and papakāinga are treated as urban geography, not as a cultural add-on. If you have a relationship with mana whenua for your area, this is the lesson to bring it into.
