- Strategy: as you watch Mr T work through the first section, note WHAT he writes for every answer — not just the chemistry fact, but how he phrases it for Merit or Excellence. What extra detail separates them?
- Mark-scheme language: identify ONE question where Mr T uses specific terminology you might have left out. Write the key term and why it matters.
- Self-assess: pause after each answer and write your own answer BEFORE Mr T reveals his. Compare — what did you miss? Write your biggest gap.

Same knowledge, different grade. Two students both know that bromine water decolourises with an alkene. One gets Achieved, the other Excellence.
Two minutes: write what you think the Excellence answer contains that the Achieved one does not. Keep it — you will check it against the actual criteria in Activity 1, and most people guess 'more detail' when the real answer is different.
📋 Three Sample Answers — Grade These
Question: "Explain why bromine water decolourises when added to an alkene."
Answer A. Bromine water decolourises because the alkene reacts with the bromine. The orange colour goes away.
Answer B. The C=C double bond in the alkene reacts with bromine (Br₂) in an addition reaction. The orange bromine is used up and a colourless dibromoalkane product forms, so the water no longer looks orange.
Answer C. The alkene's C=C double bond is a region of high electron density, and that is the structural feature bromine reacts with. Br2 adds across the double bond: the C=C and the Br–Br bond both break, and a colourless 1,2-dibromoalkane forms in which every carbon is now saturated. The orange colour is the free bromine, so when the bromine is consumed the colour goes — the observation is a direct report on the presence of the C=C. It is also a report on the reaction type: no by-product forms and no atom is lost, which is what distinguishes this addition from the substitution an alkane undergoes with bromine in UV light, where the mixture also fades but produces HBr as well.
Grades: A = Achieved — gives an account of what happens, and no more. B = Merit — makes and explains the link between the C=C and the colour change. C = Excellence — sustains the links between structure, functional group and chemical property, and goes further by comparing this reaction with a different one to sharpen what the observation proves.
Kaiako: the standard describes Excellence as elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or using links between structure, functional groups and chemical properties, with consistent use of chemistry vocabulary, symbols and conventions. It does not ask for a reaction mechanism. Teaching electrophiles and temporary dipoles is good chemistry and worth doing with a class that is ready — but a student who writes a mechanism instead of relating structure to property has spent their time on something the criterion does not name, and a student who thinks Excellence requires a mechanism will freeze on a question that never wanted one.
📖 Activity 1: Core Reaction Mechanism & Structure Analysis (25 mins)
Grade real answers (15 min). Using the three sample answers above, working in pairs, award Achieved, Merit or Excellence to each and mark on the script the exact sentence that earned the grade — then check your grading against the key underneath the answers. Then articulate the pattern: Achieved states, Merit explains the link, Excellence sustains and extends the link — relating, justifying, or comparing, all the way through, in consistent chemical language.
Upgrade your own (10 min). Take one answer from your own portfolio that you think is Merit. Rewrite it to Excellence by adding the missing links — not more words. Underline what you added.

Where this sits in the standard. This lesson teaches the grade criteria themselves. Achieved involves naming and/or drawing structural formulae and giving an account of chemical and physical properties. Merit involves making and explaining links between structure, functional groups and chemical properties. Excellence involves elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or using links between them, with consistent use of chemistry vocabulary, symbols and conventions.
Exit ticket (3 min, on a slip, collected). Take this Merit sentence — "the C=C reacts with bromine so the colour goes" — and add the one thing that would lift it. Do not make it longer than two sentences.
What to watch for while they work. In the upgrade task, count words before and after. A student whose answer doubled in length has almost certainly added description rather than links. The Excellence move usually adds a clause, not a paragraph.
Differentiation. Support: Give the three sample answers with the grade-earning sentence already underlined and ask students to explain why that sentence earns it. Grading blind is a harder task than the one being assessed. Extension: Ask students to write a fourth answer that is longer than C but still only Merit, and to say what makes it so. Being able to produce the failure mode deliberately is strong evidence of understanding it.
The error to head off. Students believe Excellence means writing a mechanism. It does not — the criterion never mentions mechanisms. Excellence means the links between structure, functional group and property are sustained and used, not that more advanced chemistry is imported.
