Year 7–8 Mathematics · Coordinate Geometry Level 3

Lesson 3: Midpoints & Coordinate Reasoning — Where's the Middle?

Discovering the midpoint formula and applying it to find the optimal locations for zoo facilities — cafés, rest areas, and information kiosks — between key enclosures.

🎯 Ngā Whāinga Akoranga | Learning Intentions

🧠 Students will know:

The midpoint formula: M = ((x1+x2)/2, (y1+y2)/2); how the midpoint is always the average of the two x-coordinates and two y-coordinates; applications in design and planning.

📐 Students will demonstrate:

Calculate midpoints between 5 pairs of zoo enclosures; use midpoints to recommend optimal locations for three new zoo facilities.

Watch the full clip — 6:41. Source: Khan Academy. The zoo context is ours; the clip teaches the method, then the lesson applies it to real enclosure coordinates.

🧠 1. Before Viewing

Where should the zoo put its main café so it's equally convenient for visitors coming from either the north or south sections? How would you find the EXACT middle point mathematically?

👁️ 2. During Viewing

  • Early in the clip: The midpoint formula: M = ((x1+x2)/2, (y1+y2)/2). Apply this to the kiwi at (2,4) and the giraffe at (8,10). What is the midpoint?
  • Midway: What does the midpoint represent in real life — what would you find at the midpoint between two popular exhibits?
  • Later in the clip: If you wanted to place a café equidistant from THREE enclosures (not just two), how would you modify your approach?

🗣️ 3. After Viewing — Kaiako Move

Kaiako Move: Model the midpoint calculation for two enclosures. Plot the midpoint on the grid and discuss: what would be most useful to place at this point? Facilities like toilets, cafés, and first aid stations benefit from central positioning.

Task: Midpoint Planning: Calculate midpoints between 5 enclosure pairs. For each midpoint, recommend a facility (café, toilets, information kiosk, seating area) and justify your placement using the coordinates.

⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now (5 mins)

Quick midpoint: the entrance is at (0,0) and the far end of the zoo is at (10,10). What is the midpoint of the zoo? What facility would you place there?

📐 Activity 1: Guided Mathematical Exploration (25 mins)

Optimal placement challenge: the zoo wants to place three new seating areas equidistant from multiple enclosures. Use midpoints to recommend locations and justify each choice mathematically.

✍️ Activity 2: Application & Reflection (20 mins)

Midpoint application: describe one real-world profession where calculating midpoints would be essential. Explain how they would use this skill.

Curriculum Alignment: Te Mātaiaho Mathematics Phase 3 — Geometry: calculate midpoints; apply coordinate reasoning to real-world design decisions.

Hamilton Zoo Context: All tasks use authentic zoo spatial data. Print the map; ākonga mark midpoints on it and check what is actually at that location.

Cultural Connection: Halfway between two points on a map is not halfway in walking effort. This is worth stating plainly before ākonga treat the midpoint formula as an answer to a real question.
