Write one sentence describing where Auckland's industry is. Now write a second sentence explaining why it is there.
The distance between those two sentences is the distance between Achieved and Merit. The third sentence — a named place, a figure, and a link to a second geographic concept — is Excellence. Write that one too.
📋 Three Sample Responses — Grade These
Question: "Describe and explain the location of Auckland's industry."
Answer A. Auckland's industry is mostly located in South Auckland, particularly around Wiri, Mount Wellington and East Tāmaki.
Answer B. Auckland's industry is concentrated in South Auckland, in suburbs like Wiri, Mount Wellington and East Tāmaki, because this area sits close to the Southern Motorway, giving easy access to transport links for moving goods in and out of the city.
Answer C. Auckland's industry is concentrated in South Auckland — around Wiri, Mount Wellington and East Tāmaki, roughly 15–20 km south of the CBD — because this corridor sits along the Southern Motorway with rail links toward the Port of Tauranga, giving cheap, well-connected land for moving freight. This matches the Hoyt sector model: industry follows the transport corridor outward from the centre in a wedge, rather than forming a uniform ring as Burgess's concentric model would predict.
Grades: A = Achieved (describes only). B = Merit (adds an explanation). C = Excellence (adds a named location with a figure, and links two geographic concepts — Hoyt vs Burgess).
📖 Activity 1: Grade Three Answers, Then Lift the Weakest
Grade and underline (13 min). Using the three sample responses above, grade each Achieved, Merit or Excellence — then underline the exact words that earned the grade. Not the whole paragraph. The words. Check your grading against the key underneath the answers.
Lift it (12 min). Take Answer A to Excellence by adding two things only: a named location with a figure, and an explicit link between two geographic concepts. Resist making it longer than that. Length is not what is being marked.
