A fast bus or train station opens. Two minutes: name three things that change within 500 metres of it over the following decade.
Then say which of the three a landowner notices first. Today's isochrone maps will show you whether your instinct about accessibility matches what the network actually does.
📖 Activity 1: Draw the Isochrones, Then Find the Bottleneck
Shade the reachable city (13 min). From Britomart, shade everything reachable in 30 minutes at 8am — once by car, once by public transport. Use published journey-planner times, not estimates.
Find the gap (12 min). Where your two shaded areas differ most, mark it. That gap is the accessibility problem. Name the specific bottleneck producing it and one intervention that would genuinely close it, not just shift it.
📝 Activity 2: Level 2 Geography Portfolio Task & Merit/Excellence Scaffolding (20 mins)
Portfolio Section 6. Submit: (1) both isochrone maps drawn on one base map; (2) a statement of the largest car-against-transit accessibility gap, with the travel times that demonstrate it; (3) an evaluation of transit-oriented development around one busway station — what changed in land use, and who gained from the change.
