A reference gallery of pre-checked events for the assessment, each listing three groups, the key evidence sources, and a note on what makes it workable, with a star rating for student interest.
Scaffold support: Use as a gallery walk — 12 minutes, one sheet per station or one per pair. A student who cannot choose should be directed to the event studied in class, where the context already exists. Extend by asking a confident student to propose an event not on the list and test it against the four criteria.
ELL / ESOL: Each event entry is structured — groups, sources, notes — rather than continuous prose, so a choice can be made without reading widely first.
Inclusion: Choice paralysis is real here. Narrow the field to three events for students who need it, rather than presenting all of them at once.
Mātauranga Māori: The list opens with Te Tiriti and the NZ Wars and names Māori-language and Māori-authored sources as key evidence — the Māori text, Panakareao's statement, Wiremu Tamihana's letters. Where a student's chosen event has no Māori primary source available, name that gap explicitly; it is a finding about the archive, not a reason to drop the perspective.
Prior knowledge: Use in Lesson 7, in the 12-minute gallery walk, before the Event Selection Planner is completed.
